Multimodal Instruction Options

Assigning a paper that requires library resources?

Want your students to understand search strategies?

Do your students need help with citation styles?

Concerned about your students ability to find and evaluate information?


Contact your subject librarian to come speak with your class(es)!

 

With the pandemic moving all instruction to virtual methods in for most of 2020 and 2021, there are now a variety of modes of library instruction available. 

We can mix a variety of instruction methods for your class(es), including: 

  • Tour options
  • Instruction options
  • Bonus options

When considering library instruction for your course(s), feel free to mix and match from the following options with your library liaison: 

 

For First Year Seminar Coursesplease use the following equation when picking from the options below:

Library Tours

In-Person 

A traditional tour of North Hall Library led by a librarian
 

Virtual

A pre-recorded tour with closed captioning in English. By fall 2021, we will also have captioning in Chinese, Korean, and Spanish.

Self-Led QR Code-Based Video Tour

Students can follow QR codes and go on a self-led tour with checkpoints that provide video tour snippets.


Library Escape Room

New for fall 2022: students can "escape the library" by completing a worksheet and following clues around the building to learn more about the library. 

Instruction Sessions

[all instruction sessions are designed in consultation with the course instructor and are tied to the Learning Outcomes for Library Instruction adopted in spring 2021]

In-Person

Your library liaison will come and give an in-person session in your classroom OR in the Library's classroom, depending on class size and social distancing standards 

Virtual

Asynchronous

  • Your library liaison will record a custom instruction session for your class that can be uploaded into D2L.

Synchronous

  • Your library liaison will teach live via Zoom for the session(s).

 

Introductory Level Courses

For introductory level courses (1000 and 2000 level), librarians can talk about topics like: 

  • resources available through the Library

  • general search methods

  • evaluating sources

  • integrating sources

  • citing sources

  • crafting a research question/thesis

  • broadening or narrowing topics
     

Upper Level Courses

For upper level courses (3000 and 4000 level courses), librarians can talk about any of the topics available in the list above, plus topics like these possibilities: 

  • Subject specific resources, through the library and online outside of databases

  • Advanced search tips

  • Citation management tools to make life easier, like Zotero

  • The possibility of presenting or publishing on their work

Bonus Options

Bonus Option 1: Gamified Elements

Your library liaison can come and give an in-person session in your classroom using either:

  • One of two library instruction card games designed to take the full class period (a minimum of 50 minutes)
    • Search and Destroy: a hands-on card game that has students experiment with using different keywords and search string options in the Library's Article Search 
    • Trust Issues: a source evaluation card game introducing students to a variety of good, bad, and in-between sources
  • Gamified elements, including but not limited to dry erase dice, double-sided dry erase paddle boards, buzzers, and virtual gamified options

Bonus Option 2: Workshops 

To supplement a full library instruction session tailored to your course, you can also recommend or share the following workshop options with your students: 
 

In-Person 

New for Fall 2021. As part of the Rainbow of Research Skills Series, each workshop attended will earn the student a certificate and corresponding workshop button. This is a year-round series with additional options in spring. Each workshop lasts 50-60 minutes.

Virtual

Reach out to your Subject Librarian

Along with these options, you can also try: 

  • Embedding the librarian into your D2L section so that they are available for messaging through D2L and can assist with library-related questions
  • Working with your librarian to create an assignment for your class that involves research
  • Having the librarian come in for a second class session, either in-person or virtually
  • Having your librarian meet with students one-on-one or in small groups, either virtually or in-person, as a supplement to any of the above
