Borrowing Materials: Library Circulation Services

Borrowing Materials

The Library Service Desk, located near the main entrance of the library, is responsible for checking out all materials, including course reserves. The Library Service Desk also maintains the Lost and Found items for the library.

Checking Out Materials
A Mansfield University ID card is necessary each time any materials, including reserve items that are used only in the library, are checked out. ID cards and circulation privileges are not transferable and are intended for use only by the person in whose name they were issued. A lost or stolen ID card should be immediately reported at the Library Service Desk.

Returning Materials
All materials should be returned to the Library Service Desk. When the library is closed, books may be deposited in the book return located on the east wall of the building. Please do not place media materials in the book return as they are easily damaged.

Renewing Items

To renew items in the library catalog, select the 'Renew Materials Online' option on the library homepage. A maximum of 2 renewals per item may be made unless there is an outstanding hold or request for the item.

Fines

Fines
Fines for items not returned by the end of the loan period (or grace period if applicable) shall accrue as follows:

  • General Circulating Items: $0.25 per day
  • Media Items: $0.25 per day
  • Study Room Keys: $1.00 per hour until returned
  • Reserve Materials: $2.00 per day
  • Videocassette Players: $10.00 per day
  • Laptops $10.00 per day

Overdue Materals

Notifications
Patrons will be notified via email before their items are due and once they are overdue.  If the item is still not returned, a second notice will be mailed via the post office. There is a link on these notices for renewals.

Replacements
All patrons are responsible for replacement fees for lost or nonreturned items. Charges will be based on current replacement price for the item plus a $10.00 processing fee. Refunds for materials returned to the library after replacement charges have been paid are given only if the item has not been replaced or withdrawn from the collection.

Blocks
Unpaid fines or an excessive number of overdues will result in a loss of borrowing privileges. Unresolved charges will result in a block on future class registrations and transcript requests.

Holds and Recalls

Holds
If an item is checked out, and you want the item when it is returned to the library, you can place a hold on that item. A hold can only be placed on an item that is checked out, not items on reserve, room use only items, or items that are available on the shelf. Place a request for a hold at the Library Service Desk. When the item is available, you will be notified and the item will be held at the Library Service Desk for one week. Any item that is currently checked out can also be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Recalls
After an item has been in circulation for two weeks, it may be recalled at the request of another patron. The recall notice will allow one week for the return of an item to the library. Items needed for course reserve will be recalled immediately. Place a request for a recall at the Library Service Desk.
